As I trudged up the short flight of stairs, I wondered if this was how my life was going to end. Looking through the wide-open windows of a stranger. In a strange town. I had always wondered why people didn’t put curtains over their windows. They were always too trusting. Too kind. I counted there being at least three people inside as I wondered who would answer my knocking. As the homemade blood soaked my shirt, I wonder who’d be the first to go. I only hoped it wasn’t the child I heard singing from the second-floor window.
