Spiritual Awakening

“You are in for a spiritual awakening.  This night will be nothing like any night you have ever experienced.”

As Fern’s voice radiated through my headphones, I closed my eyes.  Maybe this time, everything would finally click.  If it didn’t, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do.  My life was in shambles and I was hoping this so called ‘spiritual awakening’ would help.  I had coworkers who swore by Fern’s online classes, but so far I was a little suspicious.

My parents had gotten divorced when I was nine and it was a confusing mash of religious beliefs.  As soon as my father moved out, my mother went by the way of becoming ultra conservative and religious while my father always seemed to be on the edge of moving onto a commune.  The rules of each house varied dramatically and I learned to mostly keep my thoughts to myself.

My father had less rules because he felt like I should learn by making my own mistakes.  I enjoyed my time at my father’s house more than my mother’s since I had no rules.  Ever.  That was until the day my mother arrived at the commune demanding to be let in.  Demanding to see me.  It wasn’t until that moment I realized they were both playing me.
