The Only One

As I stared out the back door, I realized no one would understand as much about my life as the large oak tree in my backyard.  She was the one I told all my secrets to and the one who I read all my stories to.  The one who helped me edit my poetry before entering it into writing competitions.

But over the next few days, I knew my whole world was going to change.  My secrets would be released into the world and I would be on the run.  On the run from my past and onto my future.  A future I knew would be rife with hardships and disappointment.  I knew this day was coming, but I wasn’t expecting for it to come so soon.

Everything started when I accidentally let it slip that I had skipped out on school and decided to go surfing.  In southern California, it happened quite a bit, but I had always been the goody two shoes who never broke my rules.  I wanted to be seen in a different light by my classmates because they only seemed to want my notes from classes they skipped and I was tired.

Tired of being the one everyone went to for help.  But now my secret would be spread far and wide.  The fact I didn’t know how to read.
