When the donation first came through, I immediately started crying. I had never needed help more than I needed it right now. I had never asked for money before, for help before, but my situation was dire.
Everything had started when Mario smashed my car into a tree. He wasn’t supposed to be driving, but he was on his way to help his mother. Or at least that’s what he said. I had suspicions he was really going to the bar, but didn’t want to press him too hard. Yet. The confrontation would come, I just needed to make sure I was ready before I went through with it. The GoFundMe was not only for Mario’s medical bills, most of it was for me. I didn’t want to think about what people would say if they found out I had fudged how much we owed. I was mentally and emotionally exhausted and this was my only way out.
Since my escape plan was almost fully funded, I started picking fights with Mario so no one would be surprised when I left. No one would be surprised when I didn’t come home. As the moment of my escape neared, I heard the car pull into the driveway. Knowing it had to be Mario home from the hospital, I grabbed the last of my belongings and ran out the back door. Only to run straight into Mario. By the look on his face, I knew this time I was never coming back.
