When the scream shattered the silence of the forest, I knew what was going to happen. And when. And also why. Frank had been stalking us for three weeks and it was all because of what Taylor had said and done. I was hoping I could just get away before Frank caught up with me. He could do whatever he wanted with Taylor, but I wouldn’t let myself get caught as well. This was all Taylor’s fault anyway.
I was having a hard time not stumbling over the roots and fallen branches, but I knew I had to get away. I had to find a house with a family inside. Frank was a monster, but not enough of a monster to barge in on an innocent family. I just had to get there before Frank found me. And by the sounds of it, he was having enough fun with Taylor. I had always known what Taylor was doing was wrong, but rationalized it by telling myself Frank knew that it had all been a joke. Apparently, he hadn’t realized the joke and Taylor took it way too far.
When I saw the chimney and the smoke rising toward the clear sky, I heaved a huge sigh of relief. I had made it. I was safe. I almost cried with exhaustion when I heard the heavy sounds of footsteps coming toward the door when I knocked. Only to be frozen with fear when Frank answered the door, grinning wildly. But, if Frank was here who was in the woods? Was my nightmare just beginning?
