What He Wants

“Jake uses everyone to get exactly what he wants.  But in a way where nobody notices.” I started pulling my clothes out of the closet and stuffing the ones I wore the most into my suitcase.  My throat tightened and my eyes started to burn and I forced myself not to cry.

“He has always done that.  For as long as I have known him.  Don’t tell me you are actually leaving because of this?”  Amy propped herself up on her small bed on the other side of our dorm room.

“Just for the weekend.  I just need to figure out what I am going to do next.  If I’m going to stick around.  I’m not sure college is quite my jam.  I don’t totally mind the work, but I hate the going to class part – listening old white men drone on for hours just for the sake of hearing themselves talk.

“Wow, that’s the most I’ve heard you talk all week.”  Amy laid back onto her massive amounts of pillows and closed her eyes.  “Just don’t let Jake know what you’re up to or he’ll take away everything you value.

“What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.  And I can make more money and art without being here.  Without going to class every day.”

As I started zipping my weekend bag, there was a pounding on the door and I knew it had to be Jake.  And I knew he was here to get what he thought was his.
