Standing Room Only

A World of Short Stories

The Family

It was 27 degrees when I found a couple and their two young children sitting on my driveway.  I had seen the four of them earlier in the week hanging around the grocery store and hadn’t really thought much of it at them time.  Now they were sitting on my driveway.

“Do you guys need any help?  Can I call someone for you?”  I asked walking down my driveway toward the family.  I had my phone in my hand, ready to call a friend or at least a shelter for the family to stay in for the night.

“Do you have any extra beds inside?”  The father asked lightly, but there was no humor in his voice.

“Well, I do have an extra bedroom with one bed if you want to spend just the one night here.”

Both adults stared at me, shocked.  They stood up to follow me inside before I could change my mind.

I didn’t sleep at all that night.  I listened to the adults go back and forth between the bedroom and the bathroom multiple times and wondered what state my house would be in the next day.

When I woke up the next morning, all four were in the kitchen.  I peeked into the front bedroom expecting their few belongings to be packed and ready, but instead all their clothes were still hanging in the closet.

“We’ve decided to stay,” the father said as I slowly entered the kitchen.
