Standing Room Only

A World of Short Stories

Power Outage

Growing up, I never really liked to camp, but suffered through those weekends because my dad seemed so obsessed.  And it was the only time that my mom stopped drinking for part of the day.  If I had been older, I would have been drinking while we were camping and not while we were at home.  But I never really understood my mother and her tendencies.  I think a lot of it had to do with how her father treated her growing up.  He was never around very much and was never nice to her when she was.  At least that is how my father explained it to me.  She never really talked about him and he only visited once a year even though he lived across town.

But tonight, my husband, children and I are camping out in the backyard.  The power outage is a widespread problem throughout town with no explanation why it is out and when it could come back on.  I thought it was all a little suspicious, but tried to make the backyard campout fun so as to not scare Michelle and Finn.  They had always begged to camp in the backyard and I guess now is a better time than ever.  I just wasn’t expecting the circumstances behind why and when.  I had a sneaking suspicion that when the time comes, I still will not want to know why the power is out.  My trust in our government has never been lower.
