The Cupboard

Photo Prompt ยฉ Ronda Del Boccioย

I knew my sister was gone as soon as I opened the cupboard.  It was so empty and bare that I also knew she was not coming back.  I should have realized sooner what her plans were, but I had been too hopeful.  Hopeful she would stay around.  Hopeful she would help with the house.  Hopeful she wasnโ€™t going back to David.  The fact there was only zero sugar Dr. Pepper in the cabinet told me everything I needed to know.  And all I needed to know was that I was finally free.

Sounds like a bit of sisterly dysfunction going on here. Nicely pitched curveball at the end, Kate.

I love the contradiction of family ties with relief and sense of freedom from emotional responsibilities.
