When the show finally ended, I wasn’t sure if I was elated or let down. After hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours of preparation, I was left sitting alone in an empty venue surrounded only by empty plastic cups and piles of confetti. I thought the entire show would smell like perfume and flowers, but the only smell lingering was that of stale beer.
My lead up to the concert had been spectacular and I had felt like I had been on Cloud 9, but my expectations had been too great. Too high. The glitter wasn’t as shiny as I had imagined and the band hadn’t been as glowing as the reports stated. The light show was weak and not a single band member came out for an encore. I saw the security guards approaching my seat, but I wasn’t sure if I could even stand up after the monstrosity of a show I had just witnessed. Maybe he understood my predicament, he would let me sit in silence for just a while longer.
Strangely, the closer he came to me, the more he seemed to look through me. Past me. Around me. The longer I watched him, the more certain I was he could not see me. I smiled and celebrated silently as he walked past me to the next landing. I knew my dreams had come true and knew I was on my way to fame and fortune. As only a shadow of myself.
