Only One Way To End

“There is only one way this is going to end and it’s not good.  You’d be better off turning your keys in now rather than letting everyone find out what has happened.  And who you let in.”

I stared at my shoes and wondered if I should tell the truth.  Either way, someone or some group would be made at me.  Either way I was going to have to turn in my keys.  The question was: what group did I want to upset?  If I took the blame, I wasn’t sure I would ever get another job in town again.  If I told the truth, I would have to leave town and change my name.

Before I could make a decision or even open my mouth to speak, the rumble of the truck distracted Tom away from me.  Before I could move, Tom was running full speed toward the garage by and toward the truck.  I turned and ran to the empty classroom.  I had long been expecting this day and had stashed a bag of money and extra clothes in hopes of a quick getaway.

I had to get away from the man I knew was driving the truck.  Ranger would and did know exactly how to bring me down.  I had been successful in hiding from him for three years, but one slipup brought him back.  Anyone who says brother knows best is always lying.
