“His first assistant was a nightmare,” Laurie gossiped. This was the only reason I was able and willing to sit at the desk next to her. I needed to know everything about the company because I needed to duplicate the entire company. Right down to the color of the carpet. And I needed to do it as quickly and efficiently as I could. Laurie was my only shot at being successful in my very limited time frame.
One bad decision had led me down this life of deceit and self-destruction. If it had not been for the party I had been invited to last month, I would be off happily living my life. Instead, I was making minimum wage and trying not to strangle Laurie for talking for all eight of my daily working hours. When, in reality, although I knew I should blame myself, my sights were set on Allen. He was the source of my trouble and my debt.
Allen Smith was the so-called whiz kid of the last decade, but I knew him to be a friend. He had lied and cheated his way to the top, but I knew he was still smart enough to find out I could take him and his entire family down. Which was why I needed Laurie to start babbling about Allen. Allen’s company, Speak, was the most successful, but only completely stolen company that I knew of. And I planned to steal it back.
