Running

“You can’t run forever,” the voice said. “I will find you before you even remember your birthday.”

I pressed pause on the voicemail before the man could say anything else. I didn’t know who it was, but I knew what he was talking about. My past was finally catching up to me. I took a deep breath and tried to remember who maybe had just gotten out of jail. Or what mob boss had finally died? Something major had to have happened for twenty years to go by without a single mention of my former life.

Whoever it was and whatever had happened, I knew I still had to get away. To get out of town and start a new life somewhere else. My biggest problem about this move was the fact I had to let go of Tyler. Tyler had been the one constant in my life and the only good thing about this current phase. Or should I call it my latest restart? I knew if I didn’t leave, he would be likely kidnapped, so I ran up the stairs to our bedroom and started packing.

Because of the possibility of having to move quickly, I had trained myself into becoming a minimalist so packing my belongings didn’t take more than thirty minutes. This left me plenty of time to take one last look around the house before I left for good. When I heard the car pull up into the driveway, I knew it was either Tyler coming home early or my nightmare coming true. I just didn’t expect them to be one and the same.
