I have been teaching an adult gentle yoga class at the library where I work for a little over a year and have just recently added a yoga/mindfulness into the mix. It took quite a bit of convincing for my boss to let me teach another class as I am the Youth Librarian wanting to have two separate adult programs a week. After almost two months of asking and getting different answers about why I couldn’t have a second class, I finally gave my regulars the general email address to the library. In doing this, the library, my boss and the director got LOTS of emails about why my yoga regulars liked my regular class and why another class would be beneficial to them. After a few weeks and several dozen emails later, I was finally able to get a yoga/mindfulness class to the schedule on Tuesday mornings.
I’ve started each class with about twenty-five minutes of yoga followed by about twenty minutes of mindfulness to end the class. I’ve only had four classes, but I think it has been going well. Luckily, my class size from my regular yoga class has stayed fairly consistent with my new mindfulness class and even though I have been (and still am) nervous about the mindfulness class, I have gotten a few compliments about my teaching style. So now (if my paycheck will allow) I’m starting to look into more trainings and certifications that I can bring to my personal life as well as to my job. Health, writing and art are my biggest interests so those are the trainings I am looking to take. One day I’d like to be able to teach a weekend long or even a several day long workshop that incorporates all three and have been researching different class plans and ideas. Wish me luck!
