I watched the moon rise and knew I had to be patient. If I left too soon, everything would be ruined. But I knew if I had to stand quietly for much longer, everything would be ruined anyway.
I knew coming here was a mistake, but I couldn’t help myself. I needed to know where Carl disappeared to every day after work. He was vague about what he did and who he spent time with and I knew there had to be a reason he didn’t trust me. Everybody trusted me. I was the local secret keeper of our small town, but Carl had yet to entrust me with any of his.
Everyone thought I was the quiet, innocent type, when in reality, I had done far more things than any of them. They were blinded by my supposed lack of sophistication. All of my neighbors – with the exception of Carl – are blissfully unaware of what I do under the cover of darkness and innocence.
Before I could solve the puzzle of why Carl was keeping his secrets from me, he appeared in the light of his bedroom window. My suspicions were confirmed when the shadow appeared behind him. I knew he was not the single man he claimed to be. And the shadow with him was not human.
