Rainbows and Unicorns

“Where did all this glitter come from? How…” I heard my brother mutter as he walked through the kitchen to the backyard where the party was happening. His youngest daughter was turning three and had insisted on having both unicorns and rainbows at her party. And nothing else. Lila had refused to wear anything other than clothes that were pink and sparkly from the day she could voice (or scream) her opinion, so I wasn’t sure why he was so surprised by how the day had turned out.

I tried not to giggle as I followed Seth to the backyard where the party was in full swing and hopefully end before there were too many tantrums. I was just here for the people watching. And only for one person in particular – Pierce. I had had a crush on him for weeks, maybe months, and I was hoping to finally get up the nerve to at least get his number. But needed a smooth way to not be awkward about it since it was Lila’s party after all. I knew he was on the bounce back from a sudden divorce, so maybe I could be his shoulder to cry on while he got to know me and realized how great and how perfect I was for him. Just as I had finally gotten the nerve to talk to him, the police arrived. Led by his ex-wife, the Lieutenant who was all too happy to arrest him. And it was my fault.
