Investigators

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is the biggest lead we have. We cannot fail. We cannot quit until we find the culprit!” My boss’ voice boomed across the room as I tried hard not to roll my eyes. This was the first time he had been in the office in weeks, and it was only because the media was camped outside. And did he think we were real detectives? We are librarians, for the love of books. Outside of work, Joel was a decent guy, but he only showed up to work when he thought he could promote his run for governor.

What we were trying to find out was who had graffitied the outside of the building. Personally, I thought it was one of the greatest works of art and amped up how our ugly building looked. Our library had been various shades of beige for as long as I worked here and customers were often asking us why our building looked like it did and when was it going to get painted? I never had any answers as the city was slow in any response to any inquiry. Although City Hall was just across the street, the mayor was more interested in how his building looked. While Joel boomed on about how we were going to catch the ‘culprit’ (I tried to insert ‘artist’ into his speech), I knew they would never catch me. I was too good.
