Academics

“I knew you were with somebody else. I just needed to find the proof. And here it is.” I jumped as Makayla sprang out from behind the bookshelves. I had heard stories about Makayla, but this was my first time meeting her in person. Josh jumped nearly as high as I did, but I felt like he should have been expecting Makayla. Even I knew Makayla was jealous and suspicious and the fact Josh had been dating Makayla for several months, he had to know.

“Makayla, this is Jody. We -” Josh started, only to be interrupted.

“I know who she is! I’m not stupid, you know!” Makayla screeched. Her face started to flush and I started to slowly back away. I wanted no part in what was about to happen. I had heard stories about Makayla getting mad, but I knew they weren’t totally truthful. Her anger was much more exaggerated than what the stories told. As Makayla continued to scream at Josh – in the library – I knew I needed to get away as fast as possible. It was better for Makayla to think I was Josh’s secret girlfriend. If she knew I was working for the school, searching for proof for academic dishonesty, I would be outed to the entire school. And I would be the first one to be thrown out for faking my high school diploma, my resume and hacking the system to bump up my grades. And the President was my uncle.
