Accountability

Two women sharing secrets, outside and in front of trees.

I always knew my neighbor played the victim. Mainly because Madeline was really good at it and got everything she wanted. She was educated, but cunning. Smart enough to pull a ruse and not get caught. But yet, dumb enough to let me in on her secret. I usually was the secret keeper for everyone as I didn’t spread gossip (at least very often), but this secret was too good to be kept a secret. The biggest decision I would need to make would be was who to tell. And how.

I knew there would be consequences of my spilling the beans, but that was minor next to the consequences of letting Madeline go through with her plan. Everything I had built would be destroyed. The entire community would be destroyed. As I laid out the groundwork for my part of Madeline’s plan, all I needed to do was discreet sabotage. I knew the easiest way to get Madeline out of the way was to take her phone. Hide her phone. Then she wouldn’t be able to share the pictures of the party.

If anyone but me saw the pictures the entire neighborhood would be slowly and surely run out of town. If anyone knew what the block parties were really like, no one would ever see us in the same light again. Everyone would want to come to the party and the mystery of having a party with only vampires would rapidly dissipate.
